Kate considers herself an adherent of sustainable fashion, eco-friendly, conscious and ethical. She sews things herself, proving that such clothes do not have to be expensive.

About the page author

The heroine of our column is called Kate. She was born and raised in Sydney, then lived in London, and now has moved to the Netherlands. Kate says that her mother taught her to sew as a child. “Since then, I have become addicted to making clothes with my own hands and finding my own style,” she says. Kate calls herself a sustainable fashion enthusiast. This is both a global trend and a new culture of consumption, a special attitude to clothing, implying ethics, environmental friendliness, consciousness, and rejection of unnecessary, excessive consumption. Ecostandards more often than not can afford to follow the cheapest brands, but Kate believes that a lot can be done without spending too much.

“Sustainable fashion is not necessarily expensive. To follow its principles, high prosperity is not needed,” Kate writes. “Sustainable fashion is not always about buying expensive brands of clothing that are made from high-quality, expensive materials and sewn in factories that worry about working conditions. If you are interested in this view of things, you can use it to the best of your ability. For example, not to buy unnecessary things, to find out how and what fabric you are sewing from, to figure out how to use scraps left over from other projects, to alter and repair things so that they last longer. On her page, Kate discusses the principles of sustainable fashion and their implementation for those who sew. There are many photos of her works: clothes, quilts, bags, textiles for the home. All these things are made from natural fabrics, simple but elegant, with interesting details, but without too much decor, and obviously comfortable.
