Salicylic acid is a component that derives its name from the Latin name for white willow (Salix alba), in the bark of which it is contained.
For the first time, salicylic acid was isolated from willow bark extract in 1828−29 by the German chemical scientist Johann Andreas Büchner1. It is known that decoctions and infusions of white willow bark for several centuries have been used to treat rheumatism and uric acid diathesis. A little later, in 1839, salicylic acid was isolated from the meadowsweet herb extract. However, in order to put the production of salicylic acid “on stream”, it was necessary to synthesize it artificially. The German chemists Kolbe and Schmitt coped with this task.2; the method they invented is used today in the production of salicylic acid from phenols, by processing the sodium salt of which with carbon dioxide at high pressure and temperature, sodium salicylate is obtained. Acidification of this product with sulfuric acid gives salicylic acid. Historically, salicylic acid has been most actively used in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. However, today, with the development of medicine, this component is mainly used in antiseptic preparations for external use.3.
