Summer espadrilles can be made with your own hands, choosing the shape, color and material of your choice.
Espadrilles - shoes, light to wear and to wear. It is better to buy a sole for shoes — they are sold in needlework stores, there are different colors and sizes, flat and with a wedge. For the top, it is better to take dense natural material, for example, thick cotton with good shape holding or linen. You can take leather, it’s better - natural: one of the master classes in the selection is based on just such espadrilles. A durable thick wear-resistant thread is suitable for sewing on the sole - in our store there is a special one.
Master class 1: do-it-yourself fabric espadrilles
These espadrilles are made from classic denim. The pattern is done on the foot. There is no clasp on the heel - a strap. The insole is glued inside.
You will need:
- finished soles;
- fabric for the top;
- material for laying insoles, for example, non-adhesive non-woven;
- paper, pencil and scissors for the template;
- tailor pins;
- scissors for fabric;
- sewing machine / overlock and thread;
- glue for fabric;
- thin twine or other durable thick threads;
- a large needle, straight or curved.
Step 1
First you need to make a pattern. To do this, place your foot on the sole, attach paper to the foot and outline the shape and dimensions of the parts one at a time. Here are 2 parts: the front and the strap. Cut out the parts with a small margin and once again check the adequacy of the pattern by placing your foot on the sole and applying the details. You can pin the paper parts with pins, as shown in the photo, and try on. Also make a template for the insole.
Step 2
According to the insole template, cut 2 mirrored details from denim (for the right and left shoes) and 2 parts from the gasket.
Step 3
Fold the insoles with their faces facing out, place a pad between them. Align the line along the perimeter, departing from the edge of 0.3-0.4 mm.
DIY Espadrilles: 3 workshops + template
Glue the insoles to the soles.
Step 4
For the right and left shoes, cut out 2 mirrored parts according to the patterns of the front part and the strap. Allowances - 1 cm where the details will be sewn to the sole, and 0.7 cm in other cases.
Step 5
Fold the mirrored details of the front parts face inward and sew along the perimeter, leaving holes for eversion. An overlock is used here. On the sewing machine, you can use the zigzag seam. Fold the straps in the same way and sew them along the long sides.
Step 6
Turn out the details and stitch, departing from the edge of 0.1-0.2 cm. Details of the straps are sewn in several lines firmly to the corners of the parts of the front parts.
Step 7
Pin the details to the sole and sew with a strong thick thread or twine with a buttonhole stitch. Done.

Workshop 2: leather espadrilles sandals
For the top of the espadrilles, you can use quite thick skin - here the skin is of two colors, different in texture. The clasp can be chosen to your taste: buckle, Velcro, ties and so on.
You will need:
- finished soles;
- leather for the top;
- thick paper, pencil, paper scissors for patterns;
- scissors or a breadboard knife to cut the skin;
- a needle for the skin;
- Awl may be required (depending on skin thickness);
- strong rather thick threads (here - floss);
- fasteners (here - Velcro tape);
- universal strong glue (if you want to stick a fastener).
Step 1
Make a paper pattern as described in step 1 of workshop 1.
According to the obtained patterns, cut out the details from the leather, not forgetting the allowances where you will sew the details to the sole.
Step 2
Now you need to sew the leather parts to the sole. You may need to first pierce the holes in the skin with an awl.If you have a special needle and the skin is not too thick or stiff, an awl may not be necessary. Sew with a buttonhole. Velcro to the strap can be glued or sewn.

Master class 3: fabric espadrilles with ties (plus a pattern!)
If you do not want to build an espadrilles pattern yourself, you can use the template, for example, given in the master class below. Please note that this pattern is for flat-bottomed espadrilles.
You will need:
- finished soles;
- fabric for the top (2 types: for sock and straps);
- thin adhesive non-woven;
- printer, paper and scissors for patterns;
- scissors for fabric;
- thin twine or thick strong thread to sew on the sole;
- a large needle, straight or curved;
- tailor pins;
- iron and ironing board;
- wooden stick for eversion;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
Download and print the template.
Cut out a pattern of the size you need.
Cut out the details for each shoe:
2 parts for the front of the shoe made of cloth 1;
2 details of a back from fabric 1;
2 parts for the front of the shoe from the gasket;
2 parts for the back of the gasket;
2 parts for straps 5x45 cm from fabric 2.
Glue the parts from the gasket to the wrong side of the fabric parts with the iron.
Step 2
Fold the two parts of the front part with the front sides inward and lay a line around the perimeter, 1 cm from the edge. Leave the eversion hole. Turn out the details, straighten them, iron and sew the hole. Repeat with a second pair of parts for the front.
Step 3
Fold the rectangles of the details for the ties in half along the side inward and sew along the long side with a 1 cm allowance. Turn out with a stick, straighten and iron.
Step 4
Attach the straps to one part of the backdrop, as shown in the photo, and pin it with pins.
From above, put the second part of the backdrop, align the edges, pin together with pins. Lay a line around the perimeter with a 1 cm allowance. Leave the hole for turning out where the straps come out. Turn out the sewn parts, straighten, iron and sew the hole. Repeat with the second backdrop.
Step 5
Secure the front and back of the sole with pins as shown in the photo.
Fasten the thread and sew the parts to the sole with a buttonhole stitch. To make the thread go better, you can rub it with a candle.
You can lay a seam around the entire perimeter of the sole.
